Why are we checking the Governor oil level?

This is an important oil level check that often gets overlooked, as many owners don't realise their vehicles need to have it regularily checked. Good thing, it is a very quick and simple task to carry out.

The Rolls Royce k60 is a diesel (multifuel) engine, and the fuel to the engine is supplied by a Fuel Injection Fump (F.I.P.), now this controls how much fuel the engine gets and when, via throttle is connected directly to it, and the more you depress the pedal the more fuel in the F.I.P. is allowed to go to the injectors and the engine speeds up. This has to be governed, as if you keep putting fuel in the, the engine will go faster and faster, well beyond speeds that the engine is designed to withstand. So the F.I.P. has a built in governor assembly, which controls the maximum speed the engine can accomplish. This governor housing has its own separate supply of oil, hence the need to do this check.

The above picture, shows the actual dipstick cap insitu with its knurled edge, complete with retaining chain to avoid loosing if it were to be dropped within the engine compartment.

Whereas on this one above you can see that the dipstick is located towards the front of the pack on top of the fuel injection pump. You will notice that the F.I.P's do not get painted and remain in their original aluminium colour.

Although we have shown you the location with the power pack removed, don't panic, it's not as bad as the engine oil filters, you can get to the governor oil level dipstick while the power pack is in situ, through this little hatch on the engine covers to the drivers left.

The hatch is the one that tends to have the "oils" plaque attached to it. Just turn the lever and the hatch will drop forward.

Once the hatch is open, reach in, preferably before the engine has been started and it is nice and cold! Lift out the dipstick, and there are a couple of lines marked on there. Adjust the oil level so it is on the top mark.

OMD 15 is listed for the Governor Housing, but I use "red" automatic transmission fluid.
The governor capacity is 1.15 litres (2 pints).

Do not run the engine if it is below the minimum level as you risk the engine revs running away, and if it happens the only way to stop it is to either press the emergency pedal on the floor, but we have heard that this may not stop it. The only other option is to cut the fuel feed to the F.I.P.

It is a good habit of checking the oil level before every start up, especially if it has been stood for a while.
